Every night in Tbilisi offers a wide range of entertainment from its 30 plus theatres and concert halls. Visit the grand Opera and Ballet or Rustaveli Theatre on Rustaveli Avenue, or the Marganishvili and Tumanishvili Theatres in the Plekhanov district. We Georgians enjoy drama so much, everyday life just isn't enough, we must put it on the stage too.
Georgia is one of the few countries to impress the English with Shakespeare. Robert Sturua's Rustaveli Theatre production in 1982of "Richard III" created a sensation in London. Since then Georgian theatre has maintained a strong international reputation. Famous productions, like "Don Juan" and "Midsummer"s Night Dream' from Tumanishvili's Theatre; or the puppet based productions like "Faust" from the intimate "Sardape"("Basement") Theatre; "Stalingrad" by Reso Gabriadze - are well known to audiences in Europe and America. They are however best seen at their point of origin - in Georgia's many theatres (Tbilisi alone has over 30).
| " | Their theatrical culture is impossible to ignore. There is almost every kind of theatre space imaginable, including the One Person Theatre, which has room for an audience of 20, and the puppet theatre, which seats more than 100 and has a beautiful wooden interior - it was staging the story of the Battle of Stalingrad with puppets (if you can picture it).
