Georgian Legend

Georgia is proud of it heritage and has many different museums to offer, from art to science to culture:

Georgian State Museum:

(also known as the History Museum) -.covers the entire gamut of Georgia's history from the earliest archaeological finds up to around. It houses a collection of icons, frescoes and porcelain, as well as an outstanding display of the "Gold of Colchis" jewellery. 1921. 3 Rustaveli Avenue

Museum of the Soviet Occupation:

- this brand new museum extends the exhibit from around 1921 to the present day. 3 Rustaveli Avenue

Gold Treasury:

(current title?) - containing some exquisite jewellery from as far back as the third millennium BC. Includes recent finds from Vani. 3 Rustaveli Avenue

Art Museum:

this also houses a superb Gold Treasury, mostly icons from Georgia's Orthodox tradition. Includes Queen Tamar's cross and some refined cloisonne enamels. Upstairs you find some beautiful carved stonework from churches and 18th- 20th exhibits of modern painting. The top floor is mostly dedicated to Niko Pirosmani. 1 Gudiashvili, near Freedom Square.

Museum of Tbilisi:

A superb exhibition illustrating the history of Tbilisi's development from hot springs to modern city. Situated in the Caravanserai at 8 Sioni Street - near Chardin.

Architectural Park:

(also called the Open Air Museum) - situated above Tbilisi in the hills en route to Turtle Lake. Contains complete wooden houses illustrating authentic Caucasian style and country life.

Stalin Museum:

A completely amazing experience and one of most visitors' favourite stops is a hagiographic account of Georgia's most notorious son. Located in Gori an hour or so from Tbilisi, where his name is still revered, the Museum is still exactly like it was in Soviet times, almost down to the guides memorized speech, the heroic realist art and a smiling Uncle Joe. Truly it is not to be missed.
